Wellington is the capital of New Zealand and its urban area is the third most populated place in the country. This region locates at the North Island between Cook Strait and Rimutaka Range. It has an estimated population of 386,000 residents along with the additional 3,700 residents from the nearby rural areas.

This place is the main inhabitant centre of southern North Island and covers the Kapiti Coast and Wairarapa. This city was named after Arthur Wellesley who was the first Duke of Wellington and victor of the Battle of Waterloo. Wellington is also called by its nickname that comprises The Harbour Capital, Wellywood and also the Windy City.

This city is the centre of politics for New Zealand and also housing parliament and head offices of all Government Ministries and Department. Wellington became the capital of New Zealand in the year 1865 by replacing Auckland. Auckland was established by William Hobson in the year 1841. Nearly 62,000 people in Wellington work for the dominated central business district and 4,000 in Auckland’s central business district. It is well-known for its natural harbour and green hillsides. You can see around 500 square kilometers of regional parks and forests in Wellington. The Wellington harbour has three distinct islands. They are Matiu or Somes Island, Makaro or Ward Island and Mokopuna Island.

The climate of Wellington is moderate where temperature rises above 25 °C and falls below 4 °C. Normally, the entire year you can experience very windy climate and huge amount of rainfall. Rainfall could be experienced during the month of June and July. Frosts that are too common in the hill suburbs and also in the Hutt Valley could also be experienced within the months of May and September. With the moderate climate snow could not be found much as it remains very rare.

You can see a variety of architectural styles at this place made before 150 years. Nineteenth century wooden cottages like Italianate Katherine Mansfield Birthplace situated in Thorndon, few streamlined Art Deco structures like the old Wellington Free Ambulance headquarters, the City Gallery and the Former Post and Telegraph Building.

You can also see the city’s oldest building called late Georgian Colonial Cottage situated in Mount Cook. Besides this, the tallest building of this city is the Majestic Centre with 116 metres high could be found at Willis Street and the second tallest with 103 metres in height is the structural expressionist BNZ Tower. Still this is not enough, you have some more options where you can visit and experience the ancient structures like the Futuna Chapel lies in Karori and is the first bicultural building in the country.
