Darwin is capital of Australia and is located in the Northern Territory. Darwin lies on the Timor Sea and has an estimated population of 120,652 making this it the most populated place in the Northern Territory. As compared to all the capital cities of Australia, Darwin is the least populous city.
Almost all the parts of Darwin have been reconstructed twice due to the Japanese air raids at the time of World War II and the other is due to the Cyclone Tracy in the year 1974. Darwin was named after the great naturalist whose name was Charles Darwin. The initial settlers of Darwin were the Larrakia people and the first British person who saw Darwin harbour was John Lort Stokes of HMS Beagle on 9 September 1839. Then the ship’s captain, whose name was Commander John Clements Wickham was actually named the port as Charles Darwin.
Later, Darwin was established due to the gold rush in the early 1870s at Pine Creek. Then the European population increased and this place today is considered as one of the popular tourist destinations. Darwin faced critical attacks during World War II and was bombed heavily than the Pearl Harbour. Large amount of bombs was dropped by the Japanese during war. The Japanese warplanes were almost destroyed Darwin which was again reconstructed.
Darwin is surrounded by the Frances Bay to the east and Cullen Bay to the west. The area is low-lying and is close to the other capitals of five different countries. They are Canberra, Dili, Port Moresby, Jakarta, Bandar Seri Begawan and Melekeok. In Fact, Singapore is closer to Darwin.
You can even get accessed through Kakadu National Park, Arnhem Land and the northern Islands like Groote Eylandt and the Tiwi Islands. To reach at this mind blowing place you can catch a flight to Darwin International Airport. By road you can also reach Darwin through Stuart Highway. Ferry services are also there to the Tiwi Islands. Darwin has developed its rail services recently. So you will get less frequency of railways. As per the climatic conditions, Darwin has a tropical climate, with wet and dry season. Heavy rainfall occurs here. Darwin is famous for its dramatic lightning. The month of April or May to October, the dry season starts. During this time you will experience warm and sunny climate. May and September brings a little rainfall and to enjoy this place during winter, you can visit Darwin during the month of June and July. The wet season is generally linked with tropical cyclones and monsoon rains. If you want to be here during the rainy season then come at the time of December and March. At this time you can experience the thunderstorms which were very common.
