Adelaide is the capital of South Australia and is the most populated city that is the fifth largest in Australia. It has a population of 1.1 million. Adelaide is a coastal city lies on the eastern shores of Gulf St. Vincent. It is situated on the Adelaide Plains at the north of the Fleurieu Peninsula. This peninsula is within the Gulf St. Vincent and Mount Lofty Ranges. Adelaide was planned by Colonel William Light who was the first surveyor-general of South Australia.
The name Adelaide was given after the Queen Adelaide and the city was established in the year 1836. South Australia was formally settled on 28 December 1836 as a British area.
